Masha Antokolskaia graduated in law at Moscow State Law Academy and at University of Amsterdam. She was awarded a PhD in Moscow in 1988. From 1989 till 1998 she taught civil and family law at Moscow State Law Academy. In 1993-1995 she was a member of the drafting team of the Russian Family Code. From 1998 until 2005 she was a senior research fellow of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences at the Molengraaff Institute of Private Law, University of Utrecht. 

Since 2005 she is full professor of family law at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. From 2009 till 2014 and from 2020 onwards she is head of the Department of Private Law.  She is chair of the Family Law in Europe: Academic Network (FL-EUR), member of the Executive Council of the International Society of Family Law (ISFL) and member of the Expert Group of the Commission on European Family Law (CEFL). She is Editor-in Chief of the open-access double-blind peer-reviewed journal Family & Law, member of the editorial board of the Tijdschrift Familie- en Recht and the Familie & Recht Book Series, member of the editorial- advisory board of the Tijdschrift voor Privaatrecht. She is an author of several monographs and more than hundred articles written in Dutch, English and Russian. Her main research areas are: European & Comparative Family Law and Dutch Family Law, with particular regard to the law relating to relationships, divorce & post-divorce parentage and adult protection.
