The Amsterdam Centre for Family Law (ACFL) is a multidisciplinary research Centre focusing on research in the field of family & law. The ACFL was established in 2010 by researchers at Vrije University Amsterdam and unites experts in various fields of Dutch, comparative and European family and juvenile law and the social sciences.
The Centre’s main purpose is to bring together the expertise of its members and to create an optimal environment for combining classical (national and comparative) legal research with multidisciplinary (empirical) research. It aims to contribute both to the academic discourse on the further development of Dutch family law and to the broader international discourse on the development of family & law in Europe and beyond. It also seeks to promote cooperation in family & law between lawyers and social scientists, both in the Netherlands and elsewhere.
ACFL participates in the Amsterdam Law and Behavior Institute (A-LAB) of de Vrije University Amsterdam. The ACFL closely cooperates with the Notary Institute Groningen (NIG) of the University of Groningen and the Utrecht Centre for European Research in Family Law (UCERF) of Molengraaff Institute of Private Law of the University of Utrecht and forms together with them the Alliance Family & Law. The Alliance publishes the series Familie & Recht (Boom).
